Numeracy:
Lesson 1: I can find simple fractions of a number using my multiplication and division facts
Link: Calculating a fraction of an amount
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4DL4UleRuI
- Draw 12 objects on the board. How could we find 3/4 of these? Link back to 3/4 of a shape. The four is the important number, so we need to share the 12 items into four equal groups. How many in each group? (Three) If 1/4 of 12 is 3, what is 3/4 of 12? Three lots of 3 is 9.
- Ask children to use their mini-whiteboards to work out which of the statements you read out are true and which are false. Use statements such as:
- A fifth of 20 is 4
- 12 divided into four equal parts is 3.

Lesson 2: I can work out a fraction of a number (whole number answers)

Write and solve different calculations, e.g.
A: 3/5 of £25 e.g., £25 divided by 5 is £5. £5 multiplied by 3 is £15
B: 4/7 of £28 e.g., £28 divided by 7 is £4. £4 multiplied by 4 is £16
C: 7/12 of £48 e.g., £48 divided by 12 is £4. £4 multiplied by 7 is £12
D: 5/6 of £24 e.g., £24 divided by 6 is £4. £4 multiplied by 5 is £20
E: 3/8 of £56 e.g., £56 divided by 8 is £7. £7 multiplied by 3 is £21
Which is larger?
Call out pairs of questions for children to find fractions of numbers,
- 6/7 of 42, 5/9 of 63.
Ask children to say which answer is larger and explain why
- 7/10 of 50 and 5/8 of 40.
Ask children to say which answer is larger and explain why

Lesson 3: Estimation and measurement of area in square centimetres
Link: Introducing the square centimetre
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83i8AT2ESx0
Choose two items and ask children which has the greater area. Use some that are quite obvious, e.g. a sheet of paper and a table top, and build up to some that are quite close together.
Children need to know why it is important to know about area, so provide opportunities to discuss real-life circumstances where this is relevant, e.g. a farmer needs to know the area of land on their farm in order to plan how much to use for growing crops or grazing sheep. House floor plans, so that children can see how the area of different rooms is represented.
Discuss why the different sizes of the counters make an unreliable method for finding the area of a shape and that they also don’t fill the shape exactly.
Introduce square centimetres: Ask children to draw a rectangle on 1 cm squared paper, drawing along the darker lines on the paper. How can you find the area of your rectangle? Establish that children can count the number of centimetre squares inside their shape. Ask them to do this, write the area inside
